What is the Skill-Will Matrix?

A visual explanation is shown in the image above. The Skill-Will Matrix can be described as a matrix with the following quadrants:

  1. Direct: High skill, low will: An experienced employee who is disengaged.
  2. Delegate: High skill, high will: A highly capable and motivated employee.
  3. Guide: Low skill, high will: A motivated but inexperienced employee.
  4. Excite: Low skill, low will: An unmotivated and inexperienced employee.

What is the purpose of the Skill-Will Matrix?

The Skill-Will Matrix is a powerful tool for managers and leaders to evaluate their team members based on two key dimensions: skill and will. Skill refers to the employee's ability to perform a task, while will refers to their motivation and willingness to do so. By plotting employees on this 2x2 matrix, managers can tailor their management and development strategies to better suit each individual's needs.

The matrix is divided into four quadrants:

  • Direct (Top-Left): Employees in this quadrant have high skill but low will. They are capable but lack motivation. Managers should focus on understanding the root cause of their lack of motivation and work on strategies to engage and inspire them.
  • Delegate (Top-Right): Employees in this quadrant have high skill and high will. They are both capable and motivated. Managers should delegate tasks to them, providing autonomy and opportunities for further growth.
  • Guide (Bottom-Left): Employees in this quadrant have low skill but high will. They are motivated but lack the necessary skills. Managers should focus on training and development to build their capabilities.
  • Excite (Bottom-Right): Employees in this quadrant have low skill and low will. They lack both the ability and motivation. Managers should work on both skill development and motivational strategies to help them improve.

Using the Skill-Will Matrix, managers can more effectively allocate resources, provide appropriate support, and foster a more productive and engaged workforce.
