What is the Skill-Will Matrix?

A visual explanation is shown in the image above. The Skill-Will Matrix can be described as a matrix with the following quadrants:

  1. High Skill/High Will: Employees with both the skills and the motivation to learn new skills. Example: Experienced web developer eager to learn new technologies.
  2. High Skill/Low Will: Employees with the skills but lack the motivation to learn new skills. Example: Experienced accountant who is content with their current role.
  3. Low Skill/High Will: Employees who lack the skills but have the motivation to learn. Example: Recent college graduate with a desire to learn new skills.
  4. Low Skill/Low Will: Employees who lack both the skills and the motivation to learn. Example: Entry-level employee who is content with their current role.

What is the purpose of the Skill-Will Matrix?

The Skill-Will Matrix is a tool used to assess an employee's current skills and willingness to learn new skills. It is designed to help managers make decisions about training and development. The matrix is divided into four quadrants: High Skill/High Will, High Skill/Low Will, Low Skill/High Will, and Low Skill/Low Will. Each quadrant represents a different type of employee, and each type requires a different approach from the manager.

The High Skill/High Will quadrant represents employees who have both the skills and the motivation to learn new skills. These employees should be given challenging tasks and opportunities to learn and grow. The High Skill/Low Will quadrant represents employees who have the skills but lack the motivation to learn new skills. These employees should be given tasks that are challenging enough to keep them engaged, but not so challenging that they become overwhelmed.

The Low Skill/High Will quadrant represents employees who lack the skills but have the motivation to learn. These employees should be given tasks that are challenging enough to keep them motivated, but not so challenging that they become frustrated. The Low Skill/Low Will quadrant represents employees who lack both the skills and the motivation to learn. These employees should be given tasks that are simple enough to be achievable, but not so simple that they become bored.
