What is the Skill Gap Matrix?

A visual explanation is shown in the image above. The Skill Gap Matrix can be described as a matrix with the following quadrants:

  1. High Skill, High Ability: Employees who possess the skills and abilities required to perform the job, but may need additional training or development in order to reach their full potential (e.g. a software engineer who needs additional training in a specific programming language).
  2. High Skill, Low Ability: Employees who possess the skills required to perform the job, but may lack the ability to apply them effectively (e.g. a software engineer who is familiar with a programming language, but lacks the ability to apply it effectively).
  3. Low Skill, High Ability: Employees who possess the ability to perform the job, but may lack the skills required to do so (e.g. a software engineer who is familiar with the principles of programming, but lacks the knowledge of a specific programming language).
  4. Low Skill, Low Ability: Employees who lack both the skills and the ability to perform the job (e.g. a software engineer who is unfamiliar with the principles of programming and lacks the knowledge of a specific programming language).

What is the purpose of the Skill Gap Matrix?

The Skill Gap Matrix is a tool used to identify gaps between the skills and abilities of employees and the skills and abilities required to perform a job effectively. It is used to identify areas where employees may need additional training or development. The matrix is divided into four quadrants, each representing a different level of skill and ability.

The top left quadrant represents employees who possess the skills and abilities required to perform the job, but may need additional training or development in order to reach their full potential.
