What is the Leadership Capability-Value Matrix?

A visual explanation is shown in the image above. The Leadership Capability-Value Matrix can be described as a matrix with the following quadrants:

  1. High Capability, Low Value: A leader who has the skills and knowledge to do the job, but is not able to effectively use them to achieve the desired results (e.g. an experienced manager who is unable to motivate their team).
  2. Low Capability, High Value: A leader who has the skills and knowledge to do the job, but is not able to effectively use them to achieve the desired results (e.g. a novice manager who is able to inspire their team).
  3. High Capability, High Value: A leader who is able to effectively use their skills and knowledge to achieve the desired results (e.g. an experienced manager who is able to motivate their team).
  4. Low Capability, Low Value: A leader who is not able to effectively use their skills and knowledge to achieve the desired results (e.g. a novice manager who is unable to inspire their team).

What is the purpose of the Leadership Capability-Value Matrix?

The Leadership Capability-Value Matrix is a 2x2 matrix used to evaluate the capability and value of a leader. It is used to identify areas of improvement and strengths in a leader's performance. The matrix is divided into four quadrants, each of which represents a different aspect of a leader's performance.

The top-left quadrant is “High Capability, Low Value”. This quadrant represents a leader who has the skills and knowledge to do the job, but is not able to effectively use them to achieve the desired results.

The top-right quadrant is “Low Capability, High Value”. This quadrant represents a leader who has the skills and knowledge to do the job, but is not able to effectively use them to achieve the desired results.

The bottom-left quadrant is “High Capability, High Value”. This quadrant represents a leader who is able to effectively use their skills and knowledge to achieve the desired results.

The bottom-right quadrant is “Low Capability, Low Value”. This quadrant represents a leader who is not able to effectively use their skills and knowledge to achieve the desired results.
