What is the Digital Adoption Matrix?

A visual explanation is shown in the image above. The Digital Adoption Matrix can be described as a matrix with the following quadrants:

  1. Early Adopters: Customers who are quick to adopt new technology and products, usually tech-savvy and have a higher level of disposable income (e.g. early adopters of the iPhone)
  2. Laggards: Customers who are slow to adopt new technology and products, usually less tech-savvy and have a lower level of disposable income (e.g. late adopters of the iPhone)
  3. Late Majority: Customers who are starting to adopt new technology and products, usually more tech-savvy than the laggards, but not as tech-savvy as the early adopters (e.g. adopters of the iPhone 6)
  4. Early Majority: Customers who are in the middle of the adoption curve, usually more tech-savvy than the late majority, but not as tech-savvy as the early adopters (e.g. adopters of the iPhone 7)

What is the purpose of the Digital Adoption Matrix?

The Digital Adoption Matrix is a 2x2 matrix that helps businesses understand the level of digital adoption of their customers, and how to best target them with their products and services. The matrix is divided into four quadrants, each representing a different level of digital adoption.

The top-left quadrant is labeled 'Early Adopters', and is made up of customers who are quick to adopt new technology and products. These customers are usually tech-savvy and have a higher level of disposable income. The top-right quadrant is labeled 'Laggards', and is made up of customers who are slow to adopt new technology and products. These customers are usually less tech-savvy and have a lower level of disposable income. The bottom-left quadrant is labeled 'Late Majority', and is made up of customers who are starting to adopt new technology and products. These customers are usually more tech-savvy than the laggards, but not as tech-savvy as the early adopters. The bottom-right quadrant is labeled 'Early Majority', and is made up of customers who are in the middle of the adoption curve. These customers are usually more tech-savvy than the late majority, but not as tech-savvy as the early adopters.

By understanding the level of digital adoption of their customers, businesses can better target them with their products and services. For example, a business targeting early adopters may focus on cutting-edge technology, while a business targeting laggards may focus on more traditional products and services.
