The SWOT-Gap Matrix is a 2x2 matrix used to identify the gaps between a company's current state and desired state. It helps to identify strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats, and prioritize actions to bridge the gaps.

At a very high level, the SWOT-Gap Matrix is used in the context of business, marketing, finance.

What is the SWOT-Gap Matrix?

A visual explanation is shown in the image above. The SWOT-Gap Matrix can be described as a matrix with the following quadrants:

  1. Strengths and Opportunities (SO): Identify strengths that can be leveraged to take advantage of opportunities (e.g. strong customer service team to capitalize on new market opportunities)
  2. Strengths and Threats (ST): Identify strengths that can be used to mitigate threats (e.g. strong brand to protect against competitive threats)
  3. Weaknesses and Opportunities (WO): Identify weaknesses that can be addressed to take advantage of opportunities (e.g. weak customer service that can be improved to capitalize on new market opportunities)
  4. Weaknesses and Threats (WT): Identify weaknesses that can be addressed to mitigate threats (e.g. weak branding that can be improved to protect against competitive threats)

What is the purpose of the SWOT-Gap Matrix?

The SWOT-Gap Matrix is a 2x2 matrix used to identify the gaps between a company's current state and desired state. It helps to identify strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats, and prioritize actions to bridge the gaps.

The SWOT-Gap Matrix is divided into four quadrants:

  • Strengths and Opportunities (SO)
  • Strengths and Threats (ST)
  • Weaknesses and Opportunities (WO)
  • Weaknesses and Threats (WT)

The SO quadrant is used to identify strengths that can be leveraged to take advantage of opportunities. For example, a company may have a strong customer service team that can be used to capitalize on new market opportunities. The ST quadrant is used to identify strengths that can be used to mitigate threats. For example, a company may have a strong brand that can be used to protect against competitive threats. The WO quadrant is used to identify weaknesses that can be addressed to take advantage of opportunities. For example, a company may have weak customer service that can be improved to capitalize on new market opportunities. The WT quadrant is used to identify weaknesses that can be addressed to mitigate threats. For example, a company may have weak branding that can be improved to protect against competitive threats.
