What is the ITIL Service Value Matrix?

A visual explanation is shown in the image above. The ITIL Service Value Matrix can be described as a matrix with the following quadrants:

  1. High Value/Low Cost: Services that are high value and low cost should be invested in and improved, e.g. customer support.
  2. High Value/High Cost: Services that are high value and high cost should be evaluated to determine if they are worth the cost, e.g. research and development.
  3. Low Value/Low Cost: Services that are low value and low cost should be eliminated or outsourced, e.g. data entry.
  4. Low Value/High Cost: Services that are low value and high cost should be replaced with more cost-effective alternatives, e.g. cloud-based software.

What is the purpose of the ITIL Service Value Matrix?

The ITIL Service Value Matrix is a 2x2 matrix used to identify and prioritize services based on their value to the customer and their cost to the organization. The matrix can be used to identify which services should be improved, replaced, or eliminated. It can also be used to identify which services should be invested in and which should be outsourced.

The matrix is divided into four quadrants: High Value/Low Cost, High Value/High Cost, Low Value/Low Cost, and Low Value/High Cost.
