What is the purpose of the Capability Planning Matrix?

The Capability Planning Matrix is a tool used to identify and prioritize capabilities that are needed to achieve a desired outcome. It is used to assess the current capabilities of an organization and what capabilities need to be developed or improved in order to reach a desired goal. This matrix is a 2x2 grid that divides capabilities into four categories:

  • Must-have capabilities
  • Should-have capabilities
  • Could-have capabilities
  • Won't-have capabilities

The matrix is used to identify which capabilities are necessary for an organization to reach its objectives. The categories are based on the importance of the capability and the likelihood of it being achieved. Must-have capabilities are those that are essential for success and are likely to be achieved. Should-have capabilities are those that are important but may not be achievable. Could-have capabilities are those that are desirable but not essential, and won't-have capabilities are those that are not necessary and are unlikely to be achieved.

The Capability Planning Matrix can be used to identify gaps in an organization's capabilities and to prioritize which capabilities should be developed or improved. It can also be used to assess the current capabilities of an organization and to identify areas for improvement. This matrix can be used by organizations of all sizes, from small businesses to large corporations.
